DETAILS ABOUT SSB INTERVIEW

Services selection board interview (SSB interview) is the 2nd stage of the Defence examination. Defence examination is conducted 2 times in years. NDA and CDS exam is conducted by UPSC (union public service commission). There are different positions available in the Indian Defence system. Now women candidates can also apply for Defence services. SSB interview also called as “Intelligence and personality test”. This is conducted by the SSB board, ministry of Defence. Those who clear the first stage (Either CDS or NDA) have to undergo the 2nd stage SSB interviews. The interview involves psychological tests of personality, to assess the candidate's suitability for getting inducted into the armed forces.

 

SSB interview took in a period of 5 days. SSB interview stage comprises in 2 sub-stages.

Stage 1: screening

• Officers intelligence test (ORI)
• Picture perception and description (PPDT)

The picture is flashed for 30 seconds. The candidate has to broadly note down all seven parameters with a number of characters, age, gender, mood, action relating to past, present, and future for each character in 1 minute. Time for story writing is 4 minutes.

• Group discussion (GD)

In this phase batches is divided into different groups. The strength of groups is around 15 candidates. Each candidate narrates his individual written story. In part 2 all the candidates have to discuss amongst themselves.

After all, candidates have undergoes stage 1. Selected candidates from stage 1 go-ahead for stage 2.

 

 

Stage 2:  candidates who qualifying stage 1 will progress to stage 2. Stage 2 will be of 4 days consisting of a test.

• Psychological test ( TAT,WAT,SRT,SD)

Thematic Apperception Test (TAT): 12 Pictures including one blank are shown. Candidates were asked to write a story around what led to the situation. Each picture is shown for 30 seconds and the candidate has 4 minutes to write on it. In blank slides, they have to think about their own choice and write a story.

 

Word association test (WAT): In this test, a series of 60 words are shown to the candidate. One after another for 15 seconds each. The candidate is required to write down the idea that comes to his mind.

 

Situation reaction test (SRT): This test consist of 60 routine life situation. The situations are printed in a booklet. The candidate is asked to write his reactions by completing the sentence. They also have to write in a story how they would feel, think and act in these situations.

 

  Self-Description Test (SD): Candidate is asked to write five separate paragraphs in each context about the opinion of his parents, friends, and teachers/superiors.

 

 

• Ground tasks day 1 and day 2 (GD,GPE,LECTURETTE,PGT,HGT,FGT,OR,CT)

Group Discussion (GD): Two topics of common interest (social issues and current events) are discussed in the discussion. It is an informal discussion and not a debate. Each topic is allotted 20 minutes each and no definite conclusion is required to be deduced.

Group planning exercise (GPE):  It comprises of five stages viz., explanation of the model, reading of the narrative by GTO, five minutes for self-reading, 10 minutes for individual written solutions, and 20 minutes for group discussion. The narration of the group solution and definite conclusion is required.

Progressive group task (PGT): It is the first outdoor task. A set of four obstacles with progressively increasing levels of difficulties are to be completed in 40 to 50 minutes with Structures, helping material, and load is provided to the group.

Half group task (HGT): It has one obstacle similar to progressive group task with helping material and load to be carried. Group is divided into two Sub Groups. Both groups assigned the same obstacle in turn in such a way that when one group is working, the other is not allowed to watch it. The time given to each subgroup is 15 minutes.

 

Lecturette: It is an individual task. The candidate is required to give a short talk to the group. Three minutes are allowed to prepare any chosen topic from the four given in the Lecturette Cards for the talk.

 

• Conference

 

Medical examination is also an important part of the SSB interview. Recommended candidates will appear for medical examination. Indian armed forces want candidates physically fit and mentally strong. Medical examination will include tests for vision and hearing, knock knees, bone deformity, hydrocele etc. SSB interview is the most extensive and toughest among all the interviews conducted by the government.
